After a barn dance organised by the Culm Valley Music Society on 11th. November 1995, it was decided by the committee that they could do as well as the band who had played, (not named here for obvious reasons...), and save some money as well! A barn dance band was duly formed by Liz Cox, Susan Heard and some others, and played it's first gig at Uffculme Village Hall on 16th. March, 1996. The line-up for this gig was Susan Heard (caller), Liz Cox (violin), Alan Hempstead (double bass), John Billington (guitar), Norman ?? (percussion) and another violinist from the Culm Valley Orchestra.
On the 21st. August 1996, again at Uffculme Village Hall, the name 'Lucy Lastic' was first used. By now Susan was organising things with the band and had started to look around for instrument mics and amplification. An entry in the minutes of this time state that 'a violin mic was purchased for £19.99', which goes to show how much things have changed since then! By April 1997, the minutes show that "Lucy Lastic are one of the Society's biggest assets".
By the time of the annual general meeting of 1998, the band was beginning to play gigs for events other than those organised by the Music Society and had some new members - Philip ?? on drums, Amy Heard, (Susan's daughter), on saxophone and Cheryl Dedman on flute. A p.a. system was also bought for £400, which must have seemed a lot at the time.
Members of the band came and went, and during 1999, the band completely severed its connection with the Culm Valley Music Society. Later that year, the line-up stabilised with Susan and Amy Heard, Cheryl Dedman and newcomers Jane Lewis on Accordion, Richard Whiteside on fiddle and finally, Jon Palmer on guitar. Some gigs were played over the Autumn and Winter of 1999, with other people augmenting the band until 2000 saw the six piece band start out with a new commitment and a more professional approach.
Below, you'll see every gig the band has played since 2000. On the way, we've had Nick Rumney and Julia Pugsley fiddling, while Richard took time off to get married, Cheryl left, Amy went to university and we've gone from strength to strength! Now, with two CDs available and a very hectic gig list, we are looking forward to many more years of music and dancing.
